The Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company's mission is to train, inspire and nurture young dancers towards artistic excellence, perform works by choreographic masters and emerging choreographers, and to bring the art of dance, through outreach efforts, to new multi-generational audiences. The Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company provides many opportunities for students to perform and work with world renowned choreographers, teachers and guest artists.

Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company will be performing George Balanchine's  "Waltz of the Hours" and "Stars & Stripes" to honor Pittsburgh's 250 Celebration.  "Who Owns the Sun?" will be featured and is a story written by a 14 year old Pittsburgher, by Stacy Chbosky of Upper St. Clair .  Her deeply moving story touches an essential part of the enduring human spirit and offers an experience, rich in texture and pognant in its plea for freedom.  The book received national attention by winning the 1987 "Written and Illustrated By" Book Award and Disney made a short movie seen on HBO.  The original musical score, commissioned by PYBC, was written by Jason Coll, a local composer and CMU graduate, and now Musical Director of the CLO.  The original choreography by Gennadi Vostiko is still closely followed.  Narration was done expressly for PYBC by James Earl Jones. 

"Something for everyone" and new works by a number of choreographers are featured.

 Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company is also performing in a collaboration with the Pittsburgh Youth Chamber Orchestra to be performed May 4th at 4:00 PM at the Richard E. Rauh Theater - Hilllman Center for Performing Arts

Mayor O'Conner Performance

Pittsburgh Youth Ballet performed at Heinz Hall February 6th in a in a Charity event and tribute to former Mayor Bob O' Conner.

The Nutcracker 2007

The Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company performed The Nutcracker at the Upper St. Clair Theater, 1825 McLaughlin Run Road & Route 19, Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania and at the CAPA Theater in downtown Pittsburgh at 111 Ninth Street. There were three performances at the Upper St. Clair Theater:

  • Friday, December 7 at 7:30 PM
  • Saturday, December 8 at 7:30 PM (with the CAPA Orchestra)
  • Sunday, December 9 at 2 PM (with the CAPA Orchestra)

There were two performances at CAPA:

  • Friday, December 14 at 7 PM
  • Saturday, December 15 at 7 PM

Our Repertoire

Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company has been honored to receive the licenses from The George Balanchine Trust © to perform Concerto Barocco, Who Cares? Serenade, Allegro Brillante, Valse Fantasie, Tarantella as well as excerpts from Stars and Stripes, Harlequinade, Raymonda Variations, Jerome Robbins' Circus Polka, and Antony Tudor's Continuo. In addition, the PYB Company's repertoire includes the ballet classics The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Paquita, Coppélia and Les Sylphides.

This exceptional repertoire inspires our dancers and audiences and has been made possible, in part, by grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Allegheny Regional Asset District, The Rockwell Foundation and the Pittsburgh Ballet Guild, among others.

Our repertoire also includes newly commissioned works such as PYBC's own original story ballet, Who Owns the Sun?, narrated by James Earl Jones. Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company showcased world premiers from a gamut of talented choreographers, from the internationally acclaimed Daryl Gray's Signatures and Good Gracious Gershwin to Paul Abrahamson's interpretive Already it is Dusk to Ruth Leney-Midkiff's imaginative Winston, Figurations, Bonnie Wi' Thyme and Robert Steele's Symphonia and ...In Passing.

Nearly 95% of all costumes are furnished by The PYB Company.

Other Performance Opportunities

Other opportunities include  performing with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in their Holiday Concerts at Heinz Hall and Fiddlesticks Concert Series, Pittsburgh Dance Festival, First Night, The Choreographers Continuum, as an Honor Company with Regional Dance America, The Irish Festival, The International Folk Festival, and most recently a collaboration of The Nutcracker with the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Orchestra, Downtown Pittsburgh. The PYB Company has performed their popular Nutcracker to sold out audiences throughout the United States, from Florida to New York, and internationally in Austria and Germany.

The PYB Company has been invited to perform in the 2007 Tanzsommer Festival in Innsbruck, Austria, which includes performances in Venice, Italy and Germany. 

Many PYB Company Outreach performances benefit children as well as senior citizens in Allegheny County and beyond in such venues as The Pittsburgh Zoo, Carnegie Music Hall, the Mon Valley Performance series and Camp Laugh-A-Lot. Also, free performances include numerous school demonstrations, Senior Citizen Nursing Homes and Children's Hospital, to name a few.
